What to Do If Your Home
Floods During a Hurricane

Flooding during a hurricane can cause significant damage to your home and property, but acting quickly and safely can minimize the impact. Here’s what you need to do if your home floods during a storm.

Immediate Steps to Take If Your Home Floods

Stay Safe & Evacuate if Necessary

  • If you haven’t already evacuated, leave immediately if floodwaters are rising quickly. Avoid driving or walking through flooded areas.

Turn Off Electricity & Gas

  • Shut off the power to your home to avoid electrical hazards from wet outlets and appliances.

  • If you can do so safely, turn off the gas to prevent leaks and potential fires.

Move to Higher Ground

  • If floodwaters are entering your home, move to higher floors or take shelter in an upper room to stay safe. Avoid going into attics if the flood level is still rising—climbing up could trap you inside.

Document the Damage

  • Once it’s safe, take photos and videos of the flooding and damage in your home. This documentation will be important for insurance claims and recovery.

Avoid Standing Water

  • Floodwater may be contaminated with sewage, chemicals, or debris. Avoid contact with standing water, and wear protective clothing and boots.
